Mrs. Bird's Rites Sunday

Final rites carried out in the brief Presbyterian service for Mrs. Laura D. Bird, granddaughter of Dan Beckwith for whom Danville was named and who was Danville's first newspaper woman, will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Berhalter Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Arthur Federick Ewert, D.D. pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officating.

Pallbearers will be Harvey W. McClure, G. Clayton Baldwin, James Dubois, Frederick E. Butcher, James A. Foster and Dr. C. E. Wilkinson. Music will be furnished by the First Presbyterian Church quartet. Burial will be in the family lot at Springhill Cemetery.

The body will rest at the residence, 302 W. North St., until 1 p.m. Sunday when it will be taken to the funeral home to remain for services.

Mrs. Bird, prominantly connected with the early history of this city and life member of the First Presbyterian Church died early Friday at the family residence.

Mrs. Laura D. Bird

Funeral services for Mrs. Laura D. Bird, who died Friday at her home, 302 W. North St. will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Berhalter Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Arthur Frederick Ewert, D.D. pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officating.   Burial will be in the family lot in Springhill Cemetery.   The body will rest at the family home until 1 o'clock this afternoon.

Tribute Paid Mrs. Bird

Friday ended a career of work for her church, community, and charity, was buried in the family lot in Springhill Cemetery Sunday afternoon followint brief servicdes in Berhalter Chapel.

Mrs. Bird was one of the oldest members of First Presbyterian Church, a granddaughter of Dan Beckwith, founder of Danville, and the city's first newspaperwoman.

The Rev. Arthur Frederick Ewert, D.D. pastor of First Presbyterian Church, who officiated took for his sermon theme two favorite passages of Mrs. Bird.  They were the 23rd Psalm and 14th chapter of St. John's.  He noted two outstanding traits which were representative of Mrs. Bird's life.  He spoke of her "great love for her Lord, represented by her faithfulness to her church" and "her constant work for mankind."

Following the invocation, First Presbyterian Church Quartet, composed of Mrs. Will Shaffer, soprano, Mrs. A. E. Dale, contralto, Will Shaffer, tenor, and Horace Benjamin, bass sang a musical rendition of the Lord's Prayer. Another selection was Harriet Beecher Stowe's "When Purple Morning Breaketh."  Don Swisher was the organist.

Pallbearers were Harvey W. McClure, James Foster, G. C. Baldwin, Dr. C. E. Wilkinson and Frederick E. Butcher.
